Lesson 11: Understanding NFTs and Video Art

Vocabulary:

  • NFT (Non-Fungible Token): A unique digital asset stored on a blockchain, used to prove ownership and authenticity of digital content such as art, videos, and music.

Objective:
Students will explore how NFTs are changing the way digital art and videos are valued, shared, and preserved, and consider how their own work could be turned into an NFT.

Assignment:

  1. Read this Overview:
NFTs are a revolutionary way to sell, share, and own digital creations. Unlike traditional files, which can be copied endlessly, an NFT is unique and can be verified on a blockchain. This makes it a powerful tool for creators to:
    • Prove ownership of their work.
    • Set terms for sharing or selling content.
    • Earn royalties when their work is resold.

Video art is one of the most popular forms of NFTs. Creators mint their videos as NFTs to showcase and sell them in online marketplaces. On the ReelTime platform, NFTs could preserve yearbook memories as collectible, one-of-a-kind digital artifacts.

Example: Imagine your video from Lesson 3 being minted as an NFT, proving it’s yours forever.

  1. Your Task:
Brainstorm and write a concept for minting one of your previous videos as an NFT. Describe:
    • The video you would mint (e.g., a personal story, a creative montage).
    • Why it would make a great NFT.
    • How it could be shared or sold while preserving its uniqueness.
  2. Steps to Complete Your Assignment:
    • Research NFTs: Look into examples of video art NFTs, such as digital marketplaces like OpenSea or Rarible.
    • Choose your video: Reflect on your previous assignments and pick a video you’d consider minting.
    • Write your concept: Create a 150–300 word explanation of your NFT idea. Be creative and consider how it would appeal to others.
    • Prepare your explanation for submission or presentation.

Reflection:
Write responses to these questions:

  1. How does the idea of turning a video into an NFT change the way you think about creating digital content?
  2. What challenges or ethical considerations do you see with using NFTs for videos?
  3. How might NFTs provide value for video creators?
